Crime Free Rental Housing

paulMy perception as a South Salt Lake Crime Prevention officer is to simply prevent crime by using a proactive approach in dealing with criminal activities; activities and incidents such as domestic violence, drug houses, gang houses and other criminal activities which occur throughout the city. South Salt Lake Police Officers are extremely busy and for the most part police officers may only have time to resolve the above problems temporarily by making arrests, issuing citations, etc. However the roots of the problems are still occurring and it is the Crime Prevention Officer’s responsibly to remove and solve these problems. The Crime Prevention Officer’s position allows for a more proactive approach and the ability to get out in the community and interact with the citizens in a positive and friendly manner.

Neighborhood Watch

One of my responsibilities is to coordinate Neighborhood Watch Programs in the City of South Salt Lake. Neighborhood Watch is a program for residential neighborhoods and apartment complexes that encourages people to know their neighbors and watch out for each other. It involves a partnership between citizens and their police department. I conduct meetings in the neighborhoods educating citizens on identifying and reporting suspicious activity, protecting their valuables, home security and personal safety.

Crime Free Multi Housing

Crime Free Multi Housing educates owners and management of multi-unit apartment complexes on how to adopt a zero tolerance policy with tenants in regards to crime, drug use and nuisance issues.

seatSummer Time Safety Tips – Unattended Children in Vehicles Child in Car Seat

Every year dozens of children tragically die due to hyperthermia ( heat stroke ) after being left unattended in cars, trucks and vans. According to a Motor Trend article, “doctors warn that if the outside temperature is 90 degrees, it could be 110 degrees inside a car. Within minutes the temperature can climb to 150 degrees or more. In a short time, a child can become dehydrated with the body’s internal temperature climbing above 107 degrees. Even five minutes locked in an overheated car is too much for a small child”. With the Lock Smith just five minutes away, people wonder why I smash car windows so quickly.

How to make the bad guys uncomfortable!

What Do Criminals Like?

house*How hard would it be to sneak up to this house without being detected? *Would the residents inside the house be able to see someone approaching from the street?
*Does this house give a burglar cover as he gains entry into the house? How long could the burglar stay behind the bushes in front of the window without being seen?

Is there any Territorial Reinforcement that shows a transitional area between the street and the home?

Is there any thing that would tell someone that you’re no longer on public property?

hideLandscaping can define territory, control access and create ownership. Here is the 2 1/2 ft and 6 ft rule: bushes and shrubs no higher than 2 ½ ft above the ground and the tree canopies cut 6 ft high.

Overgrown or improperly placed landscaping will give the criminal cover and create ambush points.

What Do Criminals Dislike?

houseBelieve it or not there are things you can do to make criminals very uncomfortable just being on or close to your home and property. For example, this home shows ownership. You definitely know where public property ends and the home owner’s property begins. This is a good example of Territorial Reinforcement, which is creating a transitional area between the street and home.

Natural Surveillance

How hard would it be to sneak up to this house without being detected?. Would the residents inside the house be able to see someone approaching from the street? Will this house give a burglar cover as he gains entry into the house? How long could a burglar remain on the property without being seen? Are there any ambush points?

As the criminal approaches this house, he will have all kinds of thoughts running through his head for example:

  • Is there someone home looking through the window as I approach?
  • Will the neighbors see me on this property and call the police?
  • Where can I hide?

If the criminal thinks they can be observed and identified, they are less likely to act criminally on your property. Chances are the burglar is going to feel extremely uncomfortable in regards to this home and go else where.

At night it is important to fully illuminate all doorways that open to the outside. Provide appropriate illumination to sidewalks and all areas of the yard and select landscaping so it will allow unobstructed views of vulnerable doors and windows
