By now most residents of the City of South Salt Lake have received a 95 gallon recycle container. Beginning December 1, 2008 residents are encouraged, but not required, to begin recycling items from the approved list. As much as 25% of landfill space, as well as a large amount of natural resources can be saved by residents participating in a wide scale recycling effort.
Currently city residents receive weekly curbside solid waste collection and spring and fall cleanup. In addition, residents can have waste dumpsters delivered to their driveways with most of the cost subsidized by other city funds. The value of these services per household is approximately $8.00/month based on the most recent budget projections. For the past several years the entire cost of solid waste collection and disposal has been funded completely with general city revenues.
Due to increased costs associated with current solid waste removal services, and also with the implementation of city wide recycling, it is necessary at this time to assess a waste collection fee. The City Council arrived at this decision after months of discussion and much public input. Beginning in January 2009 a fee of $3.00/month will be assessed to residents receiving waste collection services.
Due to the fact that this policy takes effect on December 1, 2008 the first bill residents receive will be in the amount of $21.00 to pay for a seven month period (December 2008 through June 2009). Subsequent billings will be in the amount of $18.00 for a six month period. Residents on the city’s water/sewer system will see the waste collection fee included every six months on their utility bill. Residents not receiving city water/sewer service will receive a separate semi-annual bill. Owners of qualifying rental properties will be assessed an annual fee in the amount of $36.00 which will be included on the apartment license renewal application.
Fee Waiver Eligibility
The City Council realizes that this new fee will create a hardship for some residents. For this reason certain residents can be exempted from paying the waste collection fee. Residents are encouraged to print and review the downloadable information in order to determine fee waiver eligibility. Residents who do not want to participate in the recycling program can have the container removed from their premises by contacting the city. The monthly fee would still be assessed unless the resident qualifies for the fee waiver.
The City of South Salt Lake continually strives to provide the highest level of public services to its residents. The city also strives to provide these services as economically and efficiently as possible.
